Deaf Wish last show, Yah-Yah's Sat 29th
Deaf Wish are calling it a day this Saturday as Nick Pratt aka Soul Boy is moving further west to Perth. He's opening up a cafe with his woman i hear. Good luck Nick! Also playing is Teen Archer and The Stabs (They have some killer new tracks). Really going to miss seeing Nick and Jensen out-heckle each other.
I've heard they have a lot of new recordings that will hopefully see the light of day in the near future.
If you don't go to this show, you should move to another city.

Brothers, Dames.
A couple of specials on this week.
The Puta Madre Brothers are an experience pretty much unlike any other. Three guys, each with a guitar and a kick drum, just like in the picture, they make a strange, loud, howling racket. It's good to see them with an album out:
I'm pretty sure that title translates as "cheese and balls"by the way. Go figure.
Then on Saturday, you can catch what I think is the second outing, maybe the third, for the Dames, over at the Great Britain:
I have no idea what to expect from this, but given the ladies involved- Clare Moore, Kaye-Louise Patterson and Rosie Westbrook- I'd assume it'd be pretty good.

Yeah yeah, Yah-Yah's is doing another record fair!!
It was pretty sick last time with Bruce Milne(Au Go Go/The Tote), Dan Stewart(Stained Circles/UV Race/Straight Jacket Nation), Richie 1250(Stone Love on PBS), Mick from Off The Hip....etc
ANYWAY, go to this and get some good bargains... and stick around for Spencer P Jones of the Beasts Of Bourbon!

It's BACK! After hundreds of people kicked down the doors of Yah Yah's in February to snap up bargains and rarities, the CRATE DIGGER RECORD FAIR is returning to allow vinyl junkies to get their fix on Sunday 11th April at 2pm. We've got all the same stallholders as last night plus a bunch of newies, with stalls over three rooms (so there's more space and more stalls too). So get down early to get the hot records before anyone else, then stick around for a few drinks and catch Spencer P Jones & The Escape Committee at 6pm as they rock the house and help y'all settle in for the night. Entry is $2 before 5pm and free thereafter. See youse there.

Album of the week- Digger & the Pussycats: "DIY"
Huh. They play, they break up, they tour, they fuck themselves up. And every year or so (give or take, generously) they serve up another album.
If you've heard Sam & Andy before, you'll know what to expect- a fine squawking thrash-racket and gut-rush of clever (but not "clever") tunes that fill the air like the welcome sound of an old friend with a six pack knocking on your door.
If you haven't seen them live- and surely there can't be many who haven't- you can remedy that by heading along to Yah Yah's on Thursday 1st April, where they will be launching this in fine noisy style.

Travel time.
Well, one way or another I was always going to be on the road this (long) weekend.
For the first time ever, I'm booked in for Golden Plains:
There's a long and involved story about two friends getting me drunk and suggesting this would be an ideal way to get over my general dislike of festivals. Whatever, the line up was enough to convince me.

"There aren’t many people in Australia who have actually seen North Carolina rock and roll band Reigning Sound in the flesh and it’s looking less and less likely each year that they’ll ever make it out here to Australia. Well there is a way you can come close to the experience, and that is to get down to Yah Yah’s this Sunday night when Australia’s one and only Reigning Sound tribute band, Reigning Men, hit the stage and blast out the hits of Greg Cartwright and Co. I’m not sure if they take requests but they’re really really good. They’ll be joined by Chris Altmann of Vandas fame and his new band Que Paso. Not 100% sure what I'll be up to this weekend. Seems like some of my usual steady standby options are not available. Time for something new?

Another pointless day off.
So, another Australia Day rolls round.
I'm quite happy to be an Australian, but I don't go for all the rah-rah, especially in the current climate of Southern Cross tattoos, flag capes, and migrant bashing. That said, as with Melbourne Cup Day (another public holiday whose ethos leaves me cold) there are always a few good shows on the night before. Like these.

Yah Yah's has put together a great (free) bill- Gruntbucket, Crystal Thomas & the Flowers Of Evil, and the Vandas- which is well worth a look.
Up the road and round the corner, the Old Bar are hosting folkie/bluegrass legend Charlie Parr, with some supports still TBA.
While over in Brunswick, Thee Wylde Oscars and Dynamo are at the Retreat. That one runs late, and will probably pack out.
They really went all out on that poster design. Shame Goanna aren't actually playing anywhere on the 26th, as far as I can find.

Going for the obvious.
Hmm, haven't been keeping my ear to the ground this week, so I think I may just go for something obvious:
Not that this would be a bad choice. Butcher Birds are playing a few shows around town this weekend, in support of their excellent new album- Saturday night at Yah Yah's, with Ouch My Face and Mother & Father looks like the place to be.
Although all things being equal, I'll have another distraction.
I wonder if I can slow my reading speed down enough to make a copy of this last all weekend?

Digger & The Pussycats/TAPE MAN
So Geelong won the Grand Final- i got stuck on a train full of footy fans, i got asked by an old drunk guy "Hey mate where's your beer?"
Right now i'm sitting at my friend Jimi's house watching Box Elders live on the Gonerfest live stream. Sonic Chicken 4, Box Elders, Nobunny, Cheater Slicks. Today is a good day.
I went to The Birmy last night to catch Jack Petty dj'ing, it was a good crowd- lots of good requests like Whitney Houston!
Then i swung by Yah-Yah's to catch Digger & The Pussycats-
Yes, that is 3 beers taped together.

Short, quick, busy.
The Drones open a national tour behind new album "Havilah" with shows at The Corner on Thursday and Friday, with both featuring supports from Kev Carmody and the Witch Hats. Now that's a bill that could either flop like a pancake or rise like a souffle. There's a lot of respect for Carmody in the Drones camp- they covered one of his most incisive songs, "River Of Tears" on a tribute album- here's hoping that translates across to the crowd.
While on Saturday, Crystal Thomas & the Flowers Of Evil play their first show for 2009 at Yah-Yah's in Collingwood. Their album was one of my faves from last year- it's good to see them back.
