Rowland S Howard, 1959-2009.

There is so much I want to say about this, but I can't right now. Here's something I helped write earlier today:
Australia’s music scene has lost a true icon with the reported passing of Rowland S Howard today (December 30). While no official statement has been made by management, close friends of the guitarist have confirmed reports that he lost his ongoing battle with liver cancer at Melbourne’s Austin Hospital this morning.

Howard, 50, was a former member of the Young Charlatans, The Boys Next Door (who later morphed into The Birthday Party) and These Immortal Souls. He penned ‘Shivers’, which became an underground hit for The Boys Next Door, and memorably dueted with Lydia Lunch on Lee Hazlewood's ‘Some Velvet Morning’.

In 1999, Howard released his debut solo album, Teenage Snuff Film, which quickly became a cult classic. Its long-awaited follow-up Pop Crimes was released in October this year, sparking a run of well-received shows and garnering widespread critical acclaim (it topped M+N’s annual Critics Poll earlier this month).

Howard’s ongoing battles with liver cancer recently forced the cancellation of several shows including a spot on the Homebake and Summer Tones bills. He played his last gig at The Prince in St Kilda, where it all started, on October 29. Review of the show here.

In his final interview with M+N, Howard said he was enjoying the renewed interest in his career. “It’s very gratifying,” he said. “When I play live, nobody calls out for ‘Shivers’ any more, because they are too young to have any kind of historical attachment to it … It’s peculiar in a way, it just seemed to happen on its own accord. And it’s great, because no longer do I look out from the stage and just see a bunch of ageing ex-junkies.”

R.I.P Rowland S. Howard

Rowland has recently passed away due to liver cancer. He'd been sick for a while with illness and so it's sadly not surprising to hear of his death. He was my favourite Birthday Party member and i've recently been caining his new album, "Pop Crimes". I was at his last performance on October 29 at the Prince Of Wales, he played well and was in good spirits. It's unfortunate that only in the last few years of his life he's finally gained public acceptance. I suppose it's the way with people when they are on the way out.

I'll be listening to his back catalogue for a while this summer.

Oh P.S!, don't quote me on it but i think the last interview with him(that was any good) was in Mountain Fold #3 - go to the Mountain Fold site to snag a copy.

Also, Rage released this statement: ''We're very saddened to hear about Rowland S. Howard's passing - Rage will be paying tribute this Saturday night at 11.15pm on ABC1.''

NYE and slightly beyond.

Hmm, probably the last post of 2009, and as expected, there are a shitload of shows on for New Year's Eve. These all either a/caught my eye for serious consideration, or b/had easily-grabbed art online. Cast your eye over this little lot- a rough count tells me there are over 30 bands listed.

Do not ask me why Bama-Lama go for the landscape layout, instead of portrait. Similarly, do not ask why I couldn't find any artwork to use for Yah Yah's or the Tote.

And afterwards? Well, there are a few recovery parties and such going on...this one at Ding Dong, on Saturday, looks good:

As to where I may end up, I'm still not sure. There are a few parties to check out first, and it's usually a long night for me. Have a good one, regardless of what you do. Salut!

2009 End Of Year Sum Up

It's been a pretty rad year here in Melbourne.

We had U.V Race rocket to stardom, Royal Headache in Melbourne, Ghost of Tape Man Tour, a few Eddy Current Suppression Ring shows, Reuinions by Grong Grong, The Hitmen, Primitive Calculators, (am i forgetting anyone else?), Jay Reatard smashing it at Laneway, Late Arvo Sons album, Slug Guts Melbourne shows, The Gimmies from Japan, The Stabs album, Flip Out Festival, Ooga Boogas LP, Thee Oh Sees tour.. (am i forgetting anything?)

Bring on 2010!

The best photo of me taken this year.

Split Lips. Born Loser.

Thank you,

one and all. One of the people who gave me this psuedonym is dead. The woman who encouraged me put the breath of life back into it no longer speaks to me if she can avoid it. But many other kind folks have willingly offered me sofas, beers and cold hard cash (and yes, that is in descending order of importance) over the past twelve months.

The Barman still tolerates my antics now and again- and I owe him a beer.
But, y'know, I still love doing this thing that I do, under whatever name, at whatever time or place.

Here are the details of some things I particularly enjoyed doing/seeing/being part of this year.

Here is a pic of me and some buddies having too much fun:

A Parting Gift Before Hiatus

January is down-time at the I-94 Bar. A couple of things will be up before year's end but this blog will be on va-ca. So whatever you're planning, have a good one.

Dave Laing from Savage Beat Records sent this trailer for the forthcoming Runaways movie. Looks pretty promising.

Things we do when hungover, part 115

So, I booked a ticket for ATP NY today.

I have no passport, and haven't told my employer yet. Oh well.
Fuck your SxSW, the Scientists are doing "Blood Red River" before Mudhoney do "Superfuzzbigmuff" AND THEN the Stooges do "Raw Power". I'll be in another country getting fucked up to all that- what could possibly go wrong? There's a decent Melbourne contingent signed up already- see you there?

Public Image Limited

First report of the initial PiL gig on John Lydon's post-Pistols band's reformation tour is positive. This YouTubeage supports the opinion. Was it 1985 when PiL came to Australia? I heard it was with a line-up made up of session hacks so I kept away.

THEE OH SEES

EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING

Dudes and preludes.

Now, Russell Street on a Friday night is usually a place to avoid. But tonight I'm going to make an exception:

The venue's own website has kindly provided copy for this:
AARGHT! records and Radical Awesome tours present the show of the year at Billboard ''The Venue'' on the 18th of December. Australian Music Prize slayers and Frankston's biggest export Eddy Current Suppression Ring will go head to head with San Francisco's Pitchfork endorsed Thee Oh Sees for a night of silly season spastacularity.
Melbourne shit-heads the Witch Hats will provide support along with local breeze pop favourites The Twerps.

On Saturday, Deaf Wish launch their excellent new album "Reality & Visions"at the Tote.

I have a copy of this, and it is a fucked-up masterpiece of noise and awesome. Supports will be courtesy of The School of Radiant Living and ’90s stalwarts/supergroup Breaking the Law. $12.00
There is all sorts of stuff happening on Sunday too, including a Kelley Stoltz show at the Workers Club, but it may be too much.

16 December 2009

Finally, a small justice

Continuing our Stooges theme and the pilloring of the Rock and Roll Hall of Lame at every opportunity. Overnight it was announced that The World's Forgotten Boys have been announced as 2010 inductees. Finally! Along with ABBA and The Hollies!

It's the eighth time the Stooges had been nominated and the greatest tragedy is that they're going to cross the line without Ron Asheton on-board, at least in the physical sense.

I know the Hall of Lame is a joke, presided over by turds who don't know their arse from their elbow, but if the elevation/descent/enshrinement of a band as perfectly fucked up as the Stooges occurs then maybe, just maybe, people will sit up and take notice, and realise that they don't have to consume bland, soul-less music they're spoon-fed.

You got a better idea?

14 December 2009

House band for hire

Some guy named James Williamson turned 60 recently and look who he played with in the party band. That's host Scott Thurston on the far left, who turned over his Culver City, California, home for the event. You may know him from Tom Petty's band these days but many years ago he was in a more notorious outfit.

Continuing along the line that's Mike Watt on bass, Scott "Rock Action" Asheton behind the traps, Steve Mackay with his sax and (far right) Strait James.

Ring any bells?

Weddings and parties a speciality. Robert Mattheu took the photo.

Aktion.

Hello again. Sorry for the quietude. Much occurring, on this side of the screen.
And plenty more to come.
In the meantime, Dan & Rene of Aktion Unit have started a blog, putting up both sound files and posters for a slew of their live shows- you can keep yourself entertained for a while exploring it here , I'm sure.

Deaf Wish Interview

After drinking so much at the Tote for Dan Lewis' birthday, by the time i bumped into Jensen at Prudence bar i was pretty wasted. Can't quite remember how the interview came about, but i think it came out okay.

Deaf Wish Interview

Jensen = J
Zac = Z

Z- When does the album come out?

J- December 19.

Z- Whats your favourite track on it?

"Bartender hits the Last Drinks gong"

J- Probably, ahh good question... Track 7 Slow Me Down or Smash, track 2.

Z- Did you write those songs?

J- No, no we all write everything together.

Z- Is there a reason why they're your favourites?

J- Yeah they happened really quickly.

Z- Naturally.

J- Yeah yeah, that's why they're my favourites.

Z- Does that help them to translate live very well?

J- I think so, i think so because when you record them real quick they can only get better live.

Z- So when you're going into a show with Deaf Wish, is there something you're looking for in it?

J- Yeah i wanna be real. I want it to be real.

Z- Real?

J- Yeah you want it to be real. And you don't want to repeat yourself so much.

Z- So is there something you want from the crowd?

J- I can't see the crowd, because i'm short sighted. Yeah i can't really see past four or five metres. And when i had more hair- for years it was just hair. Thats all i could see.

Z- So if you could see would you be worried about it?

J- Probably but you know, i went to see my girlfriends band last night and i saw what they were looking at and it wasn't that scary.

Z- So when you've got like 2 hours before a show, do you look at your clothes and think about whether you should change?

J- That's a weird thing, i used to- i used to think about it. Now i just try not to repeat myself. I bought 20 flannellette shirts from a shop in North Melbourne just around the corner. That was my wardrobe for about 4 years. Now i just don't want to repeat myself. Like i'll have my Cut Sick shirt with the red flannie or maybe the Cut Sick shirt with the green flannie. I wish i was good at it but i hate thinking about it.

Z- So you just try not to think about it then?

J- Yeah, getting dressed.

Z- The way you present yourself is important- even if you don't want it to be, It kind of is.

J- Yeah your exactly right, you do think about it.

Z- But i guess your not about to buy an Armani suit for a gig?

J- I would like to though, I'd like to look really good. I'd like to look really sharp. Like how Amy supported Jon Spencer last night. He looked really sharp.

Z- But he's probably worn the same suit for 10 years.

J- Probably.

Z- So is there anyone in Deaf Wish that you're jealous of?

J- Daniel Toomie started wearing turtle necks between Tri-State Lovers and Hate Club and our mate Sam Agostino(Digger & The Pussycats, Kamikaze Trio) said to him "I know now why you wear the neck tie and it's because when you go to play, you go to work." and he's been wearing neck ties ever since.

Z- Do you think it makes him play better?

J- He's always played great. You know i was at this jeans shop last year loading up on black jeans and-

Z- You love your bulk shopping.

J- Nah i just hate shopping that much.

Z- If i need a pair of jeans i buy one, with the intention of buying more. Even if i've got the money, i'll just get one. Because i figure i'm not gonna waste money on clothes, i'd rather buy six 7 inches. Then the one pair.

J- Well i like that about you.

Z- So have you got a favourite suburb to play in? How do you feel about playing St. Kilda?

J- Yeah St. Kilda's always been kind of fun. How do you describe going to St. Kilda and playing the Espy. I like the Lounge bar up the front, that's the one you want. In terms of Melbourne places to play, Town Hall Hotel in North Melbourne. Probably seen and played the best gigs of my life there. When i moved to North Melbourne it was 2001. You'd see punk bands playing with no shirts on a tuesday night. I've never wanted to leave North Melbourne since.

I do like playing the Pony 2am shows as well, always an interesting night. But i suppose if you want to talk about venues with good stages and spiritual significance, you can't go past The Tote Hotel. You can't go past it. The only time you can beat the Tote Hotel is on the footy field.

Z- Go the East!
